My week sharing best practice with world-leading medical centers in NYC

9th June 2019

Sharing best practice is an important part of any profession – none more so than medicine.

So I am excited this week to be a Visiting Professor at the world-leading Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (formerly the Mount Sinai Medical College), both in New York.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

It is an opportunity to share with fellow consultants and experts working in the field of radiotherapy about some of the developments and latest research being undertaken in the UK.

It is also an opportunity for me to see at first hand how these two world-renowned institutions are tackling head and neck cancer and learn what trends they are seeing in the types of cases coming forward.

The MSKCC is the world’s oldest and largest private cancer centre. Founded in 1884, it is a world leader in patient care, research and educational programmes. It is one of 50 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the US with state-of-the-art science flourishing side by side with clinical studies and treatment.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is an international leader in medical and scientific training, biomedical research, and patient care. It is the medical school for the Mount Sinai Health System, which includes eight hospital campuses, and has more than 5,000 faculty and nearly 2,000 students, residents and fellows.

The last time I was in the United States in a role as Visiting Professor was two years ago when I spent time at another prestigious institute the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The cross-fertilisation of ideas and concepts is vital in the on-going fight against cancer, to find cures and improve treatments, and I am sure I will come back with a great deal of inspiration and new approaches to further research in the UK.
